The Glass rod before turning into fiber glass.

Sample of Fiber Glass.

Today was the industrial visit to Yangtze Optical Fiber Factory. We depart from school at 9.30am and we take half an hour ride to reach the factory, this Yangtze Optical Fiber Factory is one of the largest Optical Fiber manufacturers in China. When we reach the factory there was a person in charge came to welcome us in the main hall of the factory, and he made some simple introduction of his company and told us some of their processing in their factory.

Today I learned a lot about optical fiber. It’s a
glass or plastic fiber that carries light along its length. The person in charge told us about the process of optical fiber briefly from raw material to the ready optical fiber. Initially it’s from a raw glass tube, they sterilized it and start to insert gases such as SiCl2, GeCl2, C2F6 and O2 into the tube and apply UV light to turn the gases into plasma so it can be coated on the inner surface of the tube. Then the glass tube undergoes the collapse process and turns a hollow tube into solid glass rod. Later the glass rod is transport to the pulling process to further improve the glass rod with 150mm diameters into 150micro metres. The rod is put into a furnace and heat up to 2200oC to soften the glass, when the glass started to melt and drip into the tube and form a tiny strand of fiber glass. The fiber is then coated with two types of color for the purpose of protection to the fiber. Then the ready fiber glass is sent for quality check to ensure their tension which can withstand 9newton weight. The visit took around 1 hour time, and then we conclude everything with a group photo at the main floor.

After the industrial visit, we stop at the Wuhan University to see Cherry Blossom. Most of the Cherry Blossom has scattered off, we were only able to take few beautiful scene of the flowers. Something which made me as a fool was I slip and fall because of I wanted to take a photo of Cherry Blossom. They said I’m the FOOL OF THE DAY!!! It was so embarrass until I wet my butt and dirty my jeans, luckily I wore black jeans and it’s not that bad. After Cherry Blossom, some of us went ‘Shopping Mall’ for karaoke session at ‘Happy Karaoke’, while the rest went shopping. We sang for 2 hours then we have dinner at the food court and meet up to go back dorm together with the rest.

The weather for the day is bad, it rains whole day and make the day cold again…
